Open Event All Welcome

Free

Come and find out about the Mayo Mbira Project at this free taster event 6pm, 11th February at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar. Get hands-on with the mbira, try it out for yourself, and learn what the project is all about.

If you enjoy the taster session, consider signing up to an introductory workshop series that will begin on Tuesday 18th March. Facilitated by Fiona Dowling, student of the late mbira master Chartwell Dutiro. By attending the Information Day, you’ll learn how to sign up and what to expect.

The workshops focus on traditional mbira music from Zimbabwe. Mbira music is community music: alongside mbira playing, it includes shakers, clapping, dancing, and singing. We’ll learn one traditional tune at a time, along with its song lines, with an emphasis on listening, rhythm patterns, and song-sharing so you can continue learning between sessions. The Mayo Mbira Project is suitable for beginners and those with some musical experience. All are welcome.

Instruments are provided during the workshops, so you don’t need to bring your own. To ensure fair access for everyone, instruments can’t be loaned outside of class time. The workshops are designed to be valuable even if you don’t have an instrument at home.

The Mayo Mbira Project is suitable for beginners and those with some musical experience. All are welcome.

Mayo Mbira Project is an initiative of Linenhall Arts Centre supported by CYPSC International Protection Fund & Arts Council Ireland.
