Get hands-on with the mbira, try it out for yourself, and learn more about this beautiful African instrument.
These introductory workshops will focus on traditional mbira music from Zimbabwe. They will be facilitated by Fiona Dowling, student of the late mbira master Chartwell Dutiro. Mbira music is community music: alongside mbira playing, it includes shakers, clapping, dancing, and singing. We’ll learn one traditional tune at a time, along with its song lines, with an emphasis on listening, rhythm patterns, and song-sharing so you can continue learning between sessions.
It’s a great opportunity to expand your song repertoire, meet new friends, and enjoy the simple pleasure of making music together. The workshops are suitable for beginners and those with some musical experience. All are welcome. We can’t wait to welcome you!
Workshops will take place Wednesdays 18th, 25th March, 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th April, & 6th May 2026.
Helpful to know
- We have a limited amount of Instruments to share during the workshops, so you don’t need to bring your own. Please let the box office know at time of booking if you would like to borrow a mbira.
- To ensure fair access for everyone, instruments can’t be loaned outside of class time. The workshops are designed to be valuable even if you don’t have an instrument at home.
- If you are bringing your own instrument we are using Nyamaropa Bb tuning.
Mayo Mbira Project is an initiative of Linenhall Arts Centre supported by CYPSC International Protection Fund & Arts Council Ireland.
