Volunteer at The Linenhall Arts Centre This Summer
We are looking for enthusiastic people who have a few hours to spare each week to join our volunteer Invigilator team! If you are interested in meeting people, getting a better understanding and experience of the arts we would love to hear from you.
Position Title: Volunteer Invigilator Summer 2022
Location: The Linenhall Arts Centre, Linenhall Street, Castlebar, Co Mayo.
Estimated hours: Three hours per week
Accountable to: Volunteer Manager
The primary responsibility of the Volunteer Invigilator is gallery invigilation. This key role engages with art and audiences in equal measure. This includes taking care of the art works and directing the public around the exhibitions and building. Full training will be given. A tour of each exhibition will be arranged for volunteers to help you explain artworks to the visiting public should they ask.
Other duties may include dealing with enquiries from the public in person, giving directions internally and to other visitor locations in Castlebar, handing out communication materials. Volunteers working on events will be responsible for directing and assisting the audience. At all times excellent customer service is extremely important.
Adhering to health and safety regulations both in the Gallery and building spaces, being aware of disability and access requirements, and assisting the public in evacuation situations in accordance with a thorough knowledge of evacuation procedures (training provided).
Informing the Duty Manager immediately in the event of damage to the building or to any artwork, in the instance of any health and safety or security issues arising, and of any other emergencies that may occur.
To monitor the gallery to ensure that the artwork on display is safe and secure at all times.
Manage the setting up and shutting down of the exhibition, including turning on/off video work, replenishing exhibition guides etc if requested (training provided).
To maintain a tidy and well-presented gallery.
Gallery Invigilators are required to smart casual clothing while invigilating.
Key skills or personality attributes are a willingness to engage with the public and a friendly confident manner is important to this very public role.
Ideally Volunteers would commit to a three hour shift per week for duration of GUIDES exhibition, scheduled to suit individual. Following receipt of your Application form we can discuss your availability with you during an informal interview.
GUIDES visual arts exhibition and events programme is curated by Séamus Nolan, Curator-in-residence at The Linenhall Arts Centre. It runs from Fri 15th July to Sat 3rd September 2022. It has been devised in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Arts Council Collection of Ireland. Art works of national significance have been selected to tell the stories of communities across County Mayo.
