Fighting Words Mayo & The Linenhall Arts Centre are delighted to announce YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS showcase will take place Sunday 22nd May at The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar.

The upcoming free theatre event will showcase five engaging duologues written by Aisling Cresham, Eva Garayalde, Muiris Ó Clochartaigh, Jack Reynolds, Joe Reidy. Their words will be performed by a cast of professional actors, directed by Cathal Cleary & Catherine Denning.

Throughout the spring The Linenhall Arts Centre, and Fighting Words Mayo mentored a group of young writers. Teenagers from across county came together to learn about the art, craft, and mechanics of playwriting. In each workshop, they explored the art form with a focus on character building, scene-work, dialogue, improvisations, live writing, observation exercises, and stagecraft.

Deirdre Melvin, Arts Access Officer at the Linenhall shares “The project began in the New Year when Covid-19 restrictions were ever-changing and uncertain. I have to commend our young writers who have demonstrated a remarkable level dedication and professionalism. And have created new plays that are engrossing and entertaining. It has been a privilege to work with Fighting Words Mayo mentors Ken Armstrong; Ernestine Duffy; Laura Killeen and Paul Soye. We think there is something for everyone to enjoy in the live event.”

The new short plays will be performed by a cast of professional actors. The cast will be directed by Castlebar’s Catherine Denning who is based in Galway and works with companies such as Branar, Brú Theatre, Fíbín, Telegael, Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe, & Decadent Theatre and Cathal Cleary, an award-winning director who has worked for the Young Vic, the Abbey Theatre, Druid and Donmar Warehouse amongst others.

The Linenhall Arts Centre is thrilled with calibre of young Mayo talent and the directors and actors involved and think you will be too! Tickets are available now. The event is free and is part-supported by Creative Ireland Mayo.
