Open Auditions - Culture Night 2023
AUDITION CALL OUT - PAID Imagine a restaurant without any food on the menu? Disaster right? What if we filled that menu with poetry, literature, lyrics and monologues? A literary restaurant where you can feed on theatrical tidbits served up by a brigade of bizarre and otherworldly characters. And don’t forget to order some guilty pleasures from our infamous cheese plate…
Directed by Linenhall’s Associate Theatre Artist Sarah O’Toole, Theatre Tapas were a staple at Cúirt International Festival of Literature and Galway Theatre Festival between 2011 and 2014. Now after a long hiatus, we are back for Culture Night at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar.
We are looking to cast an ensemble of 5 Mayo-based actors for this project.
If you are cast, it involves 3 x 3 hour workshops with Sarah O'Toole, working on a series of monologues (and possibly duologues) that will be performed at the Linenhall on Culture Night. There is a fee of €550 per actor for the whole project.
The idea is that there is a menu of performances on the tables, and a waiter who takes orders from each table and then writes the performance they have ordered up on a board. You get in costume for the next monologue/duologue of yours that has been ordered and go down to the table and entertain them with it. It's raucous, up close and personal and ALOT of fun!
We will be holding auditions at the Linenhall from 2 to 5pm on Friday 14 July. Please email Sarah at artist@thelinenhall.com in order to book a slot. If you can't make the audition in person (though it's better because it allows me to interact and give you direction and get a better sense of you as a performer), please feel free to send a self-tape to the same address by that date.
You will be asked to prepare a monologue. Instead of being from a play, this would be from a poem, or even a popular song, where you have worked out a character for the words being spoken. The popular songs spoken as serious literature can be very funny, and go on our infamous Cheese Plate. Bonus points for creating a costume for them. And what can be really fun is creating a speaker for a piece that you don't initially expect.
e.g. in the past I (Sarah) have done a spoken version of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" as a very lost and lonely Cathy; I worked out a costume where I could play several characters in Roald Dahl's "The Three Little Pigs"; I have seen another actor do "Fernando" by ABBA as this mysterious, Zorro-like character; we did a duologue version of contemporary Irish poet Elaine Feeney's "Urban Myths and the Galway Girl"; I recreated the Traveller from "The Listeners" with a cape and a lantern.
Casting should be complete by end of July, and Sarah will be in touch to suss out availability for rehearsals which will start in the latter part of August.
Please note, that we are seeking to build our theatre community here at the Linenhall, so we also see these auditions and performance as an initial step of connecting with actors in the Mayo area, seeing who is out there, and creating a foundation for more in-house theatrical work in the future.
