New Music of Mayo Performances

Music of Mayo Emer Mayock Linenhall Arts Centre

We have some very exciting news this week as we unveil a brand new online series of traditional music performances titled, Music of Mayo, this Friday 8 May at 6pm.

We've been so lucky to work with the wonderful Emer Mayock who has curated a series of recordings for us which we will release over the next four weeks in May!

We take our work here at the Linenhall seriously, in both supporting artists and in providing an arts service for all in the community. We also act as a conduit between artists and the community and due to the recent lockdown we've had to re-evaluate how we will continue fulfilling this role. For this reason we've been hard at work over the past couple of months looking at ways in which we can continue to programme content for you to access online.

We are very proud of this Music of Mayo project and we can't wait to share it with you!

We’re very fortunate to have so many amazing musicians in Mayo and we’re delighted to be working with four of our finest traditional musicians on this project which celebrates traditional music from and associated with County Mayo. We have Emer Mayock (Uilleann pipes and Flute), David Munnelly (Accordion and Melodeon), Grainne Hambly (Harp) and Peter Molloy (Flute).

The theme of the performances is the music of Mayo represented by these musicians through musical style, compositions and repertoire. The music will range from tunes collected in Mayo in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and tunes that are associated with Mayo musicians who emigrated to America in the 19th and 20th centuries.  The music presented features the tunes that have survived through generations of Mayo people up to the present day. You will hear more recent compositions by Mayo musicians and there will be a strong thread of Mayo place names in the tune titles throughout.

These performances will be released every Friday evening at 6pm and the first three sessions will run approx 15-20 minutes culminating in a final episode of 40 minutes on Fri 29 May. The series is completely free - we only ask that you enjoy them and tell your friends! So set your reminders and we'll see you this Friday 8 May at 6pm!

Please note that as we're a charity we do accept donations with absolutely no pressure to do so:
