Fidelma Sheridan

For her work Fidelma uses a combination of inks, watercolours, pencil, threads, hand-dyed yarns and fabric, paper, bleach, paint. Her inspiration is drawn from everyday experience: “I am fascinated by fleeting moments. For me beauty lies in the unplanned ordinary instances that can be captured and turned into extraordinary art. I treasure the enchanting ephemera of the everyday world that for most of us slips by unnoticed. Inspired by these moments, and by the fragility of existence and the erosion and eventual disappearance of our paths through life, my work addresses the passage of time, vulnerability, frailty and decay.”

Inspired by Nature

An exhibition of designs inspired by nature, printed on wallpaper, and created by 674 national school students from the Castlebar area. Students from six national schools created the artworks during workshops offered as part of the Linenhall’s ongoing Visual Art Programme for Schools. The Inspired by Nature workshops were designed by the Linenhall’s Community Arts Team as part of an international arts project being developed by the borough of Waltham Forest in London that celebrates the cultural diversity and the cultural heritage of the Waltham Forest area through reference to one of its most famed artists, William Morris. One of the main founders of the International Arts and Crafts movement, Morris is best known as a designer of wallpaper and patterned fabrics, much of which was inspired by nature.
Come see what Castlebar’s young artists have to offer this project. Their representations of nature through their wallpaper designs are a real delight. This exhibition will be travelling to London for exhibition in July.

Transylvania
France 2006 101mins

For his latest work, director Tony Gatlif tells a story of an obsessive love and a woman’s search for her lover. Mercurial and tempestuous young woman Zingarina arrives in Romania to find the Romany musician she met in her native France. His unexpected departure and return to Transylvania has left her both pregnant and unable to understand his departure. Zingarina throws herself body and soul into the trip, venturing into the strange, forbidding foreignness of the mythic territory of Transylvania. What she finds there is like life itself: surprising and full of the unexpected. A film of high-octane emotions and the anarchic demi-monde existence of Gatlif’s notional Romanian hinterland, where the raw business of life and death is inextricably bound up with music, superstition and love.
“Lashings of authentic musical fervour and Céline Bozon’s camerawork … an insidiously memorable visual experience.” - Trevor Johnston, Time Out
“Raw, ragged, rambling and romantic… a seductive and potent experience.” - Jon Fortgang, Channel 4 Film

Tobar an Cheoil

A stellar traditional trio of musicians comprising Brian McNamara (uilleann pipes), Gráinne Hambly (concertina, harp) and Éamon Ó Donnchadha (vocals, flute) explores the ancient roots of Celtic music - geantraí, goltraí and suantraí: happy songs, laments and lullabies. One of the finest pipers of his generation, Brian McNamara has a profound musical understanding based on many years of academic research. In addition to extensive international tours he has produced a stream of world-class and critically acclaimed recordings including Leitrim's Hidden Treasure, Fort of the Jewels and, most recently, Reed Only. Fort of the Jewels featured the Mayo harpist Gráinne Hambly, who in addition to frequent tours with the Belfast Harp Orchestra, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and Téada, has also released three solo CDs, including the much-lauded Golden Lights and Green Shadows. Dublin-born Éamon Ó Donnchadha fell in love with sean nós on a trip to Connamara. Now singing in the style of that region, he is a three-time winner of the Corn Uí Riada, the most coveted prize in sean nós. A wonderful line-up of musical talent, appearing here as part of a Music Network tour.

THEATRE
Thursday 5th June @ 8.00pm
AC Productions - Faith Healer

From its first production in 1979, Brian Friel’s masterpiece play quickly established itself as a modern classic. Faith healer Frank Hardy returns to his native Ireland in the hope of restoring his ailing powers. He is accompanied by his mistress Grace, who has turned her back on her family to devote herself to him despite his cruelty and dependence on whiskey, and Teddy, a seedy showbiz agent who is manager to Frank and loves Grace, and is first hand witness to their fractious relationship. Told in four monologues, a memory play about “an artist’s feud between himself and his talent", Faith Healer is a play about unconditional love, with Friel at his most compelling. A new production directed by Peter Reid, starring Vincent Fegan, Alex Cusack and Paul Kealyn.

“Enigmatic, atmospheric, and ultimately very spooky, Faith Healer is playwriting as sorcery.” - Jack Purdy, City Paper Online
VISUAL ART

Leonard Sheil - Looking in All Directions
An exhibition of mixed media works inspired by the sea and the Dublin-born artist’s inherited interest of things seagoing. He explains: “Every scenic and dramatic stretch of Irish coastline has its own history of wrecks and drowning; every cemetery has stories and memorials to those who have no bodies left to bury. This work does not mourn the sea-dead, but commemorates souls lost to the sea. It does not alter any sea tragedy, but merely indicates its occurrence.” Leonard Sheil has exhibited extensively in both group and solo shows since the early 1990s.
“The irregular textures, the rapturous burst of colour, and a sense of something grave, deep, old, and overwhelming suggest approaches to sublimity." - Aidan Dunne. Irish Times
