WRITE AWAY – INISHBOFIN CREATIVE WRITING SCHOOL FOR ADULTS with Jean Tuomey

Monday 13th September – Friday 17th September 2010

Taking place on the inspirational island of Inishbofin, WRITE AWAY is an exciting opportunity to write in an encouraging environment under the popular guidance of Jean Tuomey. This workshop offers a guided, supportive writing environment, and while the craft of writing will be touched on, it is not the primary focus of the course. It is especially suitable for first-time writers or those who have not yet experienced the positive atmosphere of a writing group, however all levels are welcome. The only requisite is enthusiasm. The course is under the guidance of Jean Tuomey, a teacher with over 20 years experience and a passionate enthusiasm for creative writing. Jean has led many extremely successful writing projects for the Linenhall.

WRITE AWAY takes place from 10.00am – 1.00pm daily. Cost per head is €110. (NB. Accommodation and transport to and from the island is NOT included). Places are limited, and booking is ESSENTIAL. Booking and further information from the Linenhall.


INTRODUCTION TO STAGE LIGHTING with Oisín Herraghty

Five Saturdays 3.30-5.00pm commencing 18th September

Following the popularity of this workshop last Spring, we are offering it again for all those who didn’t get a place on the Spring workshop. This workshop series offers participants an introduction to stage lighting, starting with the basic stage lights and gels. You’ll learn how to wash a stage in colour and get a basic introduction to lighting design. Oisín will guide you through the basics of lighting control from dimmer boards to intelligent lights. Throughout the workshops you’ll also be receiving tips on health and safety in relation to the stage lighting context. Lights are a huge part of every stage production. Prepare yourself for an insight into the world of a stage lighting technician.

Oisín Herraghty has many years experience in stage lighting. He started at a young age with the simple but important task of "footing the ladder", and has since reached lofty heights of award winning lighting designer. His lighting credits include musicals, pantos and stage performances to numerous to mention and all the productions of DoYouPlayhouse. He is a key member of staff at the Linenhall Arts Centre.

INTRODUCTION TO STAGE LIGHTING takes place over five Saturdays from 3.30pm to 5.00pm 18th and 25th September, and 2nd, 9th and 16th October. Cost for the five sessions is €60 per person. Places are limited, and booking is ESSENTIAL. Booking and further information from the Linenhall.


ART DOCUMENTATION FOR ARTISTS: HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH YOUR WORK

Saturday 13th November, 10.00am-5.00pm

Good quality imagery is essential for artists when making submissions and documenting their work. This workshop offers a practical introduction to photographing your own paintings, drawings, textiles and prints for use in portfolios, websites, etc.

Presented by photographer and lecturer Tim Durham, the workshop offers a step-by-step methodical process to obtaining the best possible results with your digital compact camera or digital SLR. It is about getting the very best quality results from the equipment you have. The course will cover: exposure, ISO, white balance, apertures, depth of field, jpg quality, resolution of images, tripod use and much more.

Participants should bring their camera (and manual if possible), blank memory card, fully charged battery and spare if possible, cable for downloading images, tripod if you have one, and a piece of art work to photograph.

INTRODUCTION TO INDONESIAN GAMELAN MUSIC

for teenagers and adults, with Niamh Tiernan

Saturday 23rd October 3.30-5.00pm (St Patrick’s Boys School)

Join musician Niamh Tiernan for a once in a lifetime chance to experience music making using instruments from an Indonesian Gamelan ensemble. Niamh’s ensemble of instruments comes all the way from Central Java and includes tuned gongs, metallophones, wind and string instruments. This workshop is particularly suitable for anyone wishing to broaden their music playing experience, however it is also open to those with no musical experience. Wear your best socks – you’ll be taking your shoes off!

Niamh Tiernan initially encountered gamelan music while studying for a Bachelor of Music degree at University College Cork. Since then she has spent more than seven years studying gamelan performance both at the third level arts college and privately in Solo, Central Java.
